My Newest Projects

Well, here we are almost into 2011. I hope all of you are ready for a wonderful new year full of love and creativity. I've been working hard on oil paintings and some very exciting new crafts. The origami ornaments are covered with upholstry and other types of fabric and embellished with chiffon fabric, ribbon and beads.

Fabric Jewelry - This new flower jewelry, from the olden days, is all the rage so with some experimentation I came up with these designs. The first piece, a bib necklace, is made of fleece. The other pieces are made from satin, chiffon, knit and various other materials, especially the mixed media piece. It is made or upholstry fabric and other objects as sea shells, buttons, beads, etc, and even a Chicago Transit Authority bus token. I must say that making the flowers and necklaces are my newest obsession. I use the flowers to make earrings, bracelets, headbands, anklets, shoe clips, rings, hairclips and to decorate hats.

Metal Jewelry and Switch Plate - After I came up with the copper jewelry designs I decided to use the same technique on switch plate covers. Etched and embossed copper and/or brass are the main materials used in both.

October, Chicago Artist Month Activities

Well, I'm back after a hiatis from my blog. Those summer shows kept me hopping. For Chicago Artist Month I will be painting at Midway Airport on Oct, 3rd and O'Hare Airport on Oct. 17th. The program consists of a single artist painting while a band play. I did it last year and it was a blast. I really enjoyed it. I'm also participating in the "Fall into the Arts," show at Illinois Wesleyan University's in Bloomington, IL on October 4th.

I'm still putting a lot of time and energy into my fused glass jewelry. It's so relaxing to make because my designs are simple but the nature of the glass gives the jewelry the look and feel of elegance. I exhibited it at the Park Forest (IL) art fair in September and it was very well received.

I designed the cover for a book of poetry for a client which resparked my interest in poetry. I started writing in the 1990's. So far I have 14 poems that I like well enough to be published. One day I plan to publish an illustrated book of poetry. No rush, though. I refuse to be stressed in my retirement.

Our Art Group Show

Some members of our new art group, Chicagoland Artist Network, went to the Creative Chicago Expo this past Saturday and we had a wonderful time. The siminars and free goodies were fantastic but there's nothing like experiencing an art event with artist friends and that is one of the functions of our group. I designed my above flyer for our upcoming show, see above.

I'm still working on my new web site and it should be published real soon, I can't say when. I'm still funsing glass for jewelry and small wall hangings. I have an 8x8 inch kiln so my sizes are limited. I did some painting last week on glossy ceramic tiles. The tiles are slippery, the oil is slippery so it takes some getting used to. I'll post them probably next week.

My New Art Blog

Hello artists and art lovers,

Welcome to the first entry of my new art blog. So, what am I up to. I’ve started a new art group with some friends and we’re really excited about it. We started in January of this year and we already have a meeting place, a show planned and several projects, trips and other activities lined up. It is so refreshing to be able to share my passion with other open minded, progressive artists.

I’m working on updating my web site so look for the new version soon, I'm also deeply emerged in my new passion, fusing glass. I’m making pendants, earrings, tiles and wall hangings. It’s a fascinating art. Some might call it a craft but for me it’s art. With a craft, you learn how to do something well and keep repeating the same process the same way. I find it hard to discipline myself to doing that. There are so many beautiful pieces of glass and so many possible combinations, how can I possible limit myself to a few designs.

Crafting does make sense, though. I have a show coming up and it would make sense for me to cut a lot of pieces of glass the same size and decorate each one in an assembly line fashion. Instead, I start each piece from scratch, choosing the perfect combination of glass for that particular piece. It takes a lot more time the way I do it but that’s the artist in me.

I finished a small painting today. I started it yesterday. I haven’t named it yet. I read somewhere that this artist has committed to completing a small painting every day. I could do that but I don’t think I would. May be I will try 2 paintings a week. I will let you know how it goes.
